Best Surf Season (October - March)
Campelo's north-west facing beach sits right in the firing line of the North Atlantic during the winter half of the year. From October through March, long-period groundswell rolls out of the W-WNW-NW quadrant on a routine basis, average heights sit between 7 and 10ft (2.1-3.0m), and periods routinely push past 12s. The Atlantic storm track gets stretched and amplified by strong autumn and winter low-pressure systems, and each passing front can spin up a fresh pulse of energy for this stretch of the Spanish coast. At the same time, the wind climatology favours south-west and west-south-west flow while the swell is running, meaning offshore wind is present 30-35% of the time; those are the days Campelo really grinds and barrels.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)
The shoulder months keep Campelo alive. April and May still see consistent W/NW swell energy, but average heights drop to around 5-7ft (1.5-2.1m) and periods shorten to 10-11s, so conditions become more about finding clean banks and smaller, rippable waves. September is the other sweet spot: the ocean is often still warm, the crowd levels are thinning out, and early-season Atlantic lows produce the first meaningful groundswell of the new season. In these months, the NE/ENE wind regime gets more dominant, so the best sessions are generally tied to south-west to west wind shifts that clean up the surface.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quietest chapter at Campelo. The Azores High settles over the region and pushes the Atlantic storm track to the north, so average swell heights shrink to 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m), periods drop under 9.5s, and the percentage of ideal offshore wind falls into the high teens to low twenties. Most days are characterised by short-period NW windswell and a strong NE sea breeze that wants to chop things up by midday. It is still possible to find playful lefts and rights on a longboard or fish, especially early in the morning before the wind builds, but serious wave hunters should aim for the winter half of the year.
