Today's Surf Conditions at El Muelle
Spot Overview & Description
The lineup at El Muelle, also known as Harbour Wall, offers a demanding left-hand point break that peels over a rugged, uneven reef. As the wave bends toward the harbor wall, expect fast, hollow sections that deliver adrenaline-pumping barrel opportunities. But don't let that lure you in—the take-offs are razor-sharp and committed, requiring sharp reflexes and a high degree of experience. This is no beginner's playground; the shifting reef contours and critical drops demand seasoned surfers who can navigate unpredictable bottom contours and read the swell's pulse with precision.
Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (October - March)
As autumn deepens, the North Atlantic storm track shifts south and the northeast-facing coast of Spain begins to pulse. From October through March, average swell heights hold in the 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) range, with wave periods of 11-13 seconds. The dominant swell directions are NNW and NW - exactly the raw, long-period energy El Muelle needs to light up. The orientation of the North Atlantic Oscillation can steer low pressure systems either toward the British Isles or down toward Iberia; when the latter happens, El Muelle receives top-tier groundswell. These are the months when a deep Atlantic low parked west of Portugal can send powerful, well-organized lines marching straight into the beach. But wind is the eternal catch: the Azores High still tends to drive NE trade winds, and onshore flow from the N/NE quadrant blows a significant amount of the time. Still, with ideal wind percentages peaking at 10% in October, November, and December, and decent windows in January through March, this is when the spot is most alive. The combination of a 12-13s NW swell and a light SW/W offshore wind is pure magic.
