Hondarribia seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic transitions into full storm mode from October through March, and Hondarribia reaps the rewards. Average swell heights climb to 1.6-2.1m (5-7ft), with wave periods in the 11-13s band-right in the powerful long-period window. The dominant northwest and west-northwest swell angles (NO and ONO) line up perfectly with this northeast-facing beach, wrapping in clean lines when the wind holds from the SSW-SW-WSW-W offshore sector. The ideal wind percentage hovers around 30-33%, and the cooler air temperatures and frequent Atlantic lows bring the consistent, sizeable surf that this stretch of the Basque coast is known for.

Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)

As the North Atlantic storm tracks ease, average swell heights relax to 1.2-1.5m (4-5ft) and periods settle into the 10-11s range in April, May, and September. The northwest swell direction still dominates, and the lighter winds of spring and early autumn can produce clean, fun-sized conditions. Water temperatures are more pleasant and crowds are generally lower, making this an excellent time to score rippable waves when the right swell fills in.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the slow season at Hondarribia. Average swell drops to 1.0m (3ft) and wave periods shorten to 9s or less, resulting in the small, wind-affected surf that struggles to break with power. The northwest wind machine still blows, but it is often onshore, and the surf windows are limited to weak NW pulses with occasional N/NNW energy. This is the season for a longboard or funboard, or for waiting out flat spells until autumn reawakens the Atlantic.
