La Salbaje seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - March)
When the North Atlantic shifts into full storm mode, La Salbaje wakes up. Average swell heights climb to 6-7ft (1.8-2.1m) through the heart of winter and average periods stretch from 12 to 13 seconds, putting the beach right in the firing line of the long-period WNW-to-NW groundswell it was built for. The jet stream pushes a parade of extratropical cyclones toward the Bay of Biscay, and the pre-frontal southerly flow that often accompanies them blows straight offshore. With ideal winds registered between 30 and 31 percent of the time, the winter months deliver the most consistent combination of size, power and shape.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September - October)
The shoulder seasons are transitional and require a little more luck. April and May are still full of NW swell, but the average height drops to 4-5ft (1.2-1.4m) and the period shortens to 10-11 seconds, so the beach becomes a fun but less serious wave. September and October mark the start of the autumn ramp: September averages 4ft (1.2m), while October jumps to 5ft (1.5m) with a promising 11-second period and the best wind statistics of the year at 38 percent ideal. These months can produce glassy, long-period gems for every surfer, but consistency is not yet at winter levels.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the sleepy season at La Salbaje. Average swell heights sit at a marginal 3ft (1.0m), periods hover around 9 seconds, and the majority of the wave energy comes from local NW and NNW windswell rather than distant storm systems. The beach is exposed to the same directions that produce winter gold, but summer swells lack the period and size to do much with, and the thermal northerly winds that build through the afternoon often add unwanted chop. Still, dawn patrols with light offshore breezes and shoulder-high sets can save the summer, especially during early season hurricane or southern-hemisphere swell windows.
