Best Surf Season (October - March)
Las Salinas comes alive when the North Atlantic autumn transition kicks in. As the Azores High begins to relax and the Icelandic Low strengthens, low-pressure systems track across the Atlantic and aim long-period groundswell toward the Iberian Peninsula. An important nuance for this SSW-facing stretch is that direct S/SW swell is relatively rare in the climatological data; the real bread-and-butter energy comes from the long-period NNW/N/NW groundswell that refracts into the bay. The wind climatology is kind to Las Salinas, too: the bad S/SW onshore flow rarely shows up, while offshore N/NNE/NNW winds are the dominant signal. October is the standout month with ideal surfing conditions 37% of the time, while November through March still offer 24-30% ideal wind windows. Average wave heights hover around 1.4-1.7m (4.5-5.5ft) and periods sit in the 11.6-12.9s range, so there is genuine power behind the swell. This is the time to book your trip.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
The shoulder months are transitional. April still has winter volume in the water - 1.6m (5ft) average - but the average period falls to 11.0s and the percentage of truly clean, ideal wind drops to 21%. September tells the opposite story: average size is smaller at 1.2m (4ft), but the period is climbing back to 10.0s and ideal winds return at 28%, signaling the first real pulses of autumn. Both months can be excellent on the right day, yet you have to be a little more flexible with your session timing.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
Summer is the sleepy season for Las Salinas. The Azores High becomes the dominant weather feature and the main storm track retreats toward Iceland, cutting off the supply of long-period groundswell. Between May and August, average wave heights dwindle to 1.2-1.4m (4-4.5ft), periods fall to 7.6-9.6s, and surf quality shifts to short-period windswell. The wind still blows from the north and northeast, but it often cranks 20-40kph, which puts a stubborn chop on the surface. July is the bottom of the barrel, with ideal conditions only 3% of the time. The late summer trend finally turns in September as the North Atlantic begins to wake up again.
