Orrua seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

From October through March, Orrua sits in the heart of northern Spain's most active surf window. The North Atlantic storm track is loaded with extratropical cyclones, and average combined swell heights run between 1.6m and 2.1m (5-7ft) with periods of 11-13s. The wave rose is dominated by NW and WNW energy, with a solid NNW component mixed in - exactly the directions that light up this north-facing beach. Offshore winds also become more regular, with 41-46 percent of the observations blowing from the southern quadrant. When the NAO turns negative and the storm track pushes south, Orrua receives powerful, long-period groundswell under clean offshore breezes. That is the recipe for the best surf of the year.

Fair Surf Season (April, May and September)

The shoulder months still produce surf, but the consistency and size begin to fade. April and September average 1.3-1.5m (4-5ft) with periods around 10-11s, while May drops further to 1.2m (3-4ft) and 9.9s. The Azores High starts to assert itself, weakening the Atlantic storm conveyor and reducing the frequency of good offshore wind. Ideal wind windows fall to 30-33 percent, and the wind rose shows a growing onshore NNW/N component. These months reward flexible surfers who can make the most of punchy morning groundswell before the seabreeze and cross-shore wind mess up the surface.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the quietest stretch at Orrua. The Azores High blocks the storm track to the north and the average swell height drops to just 1m (3ft) with periods below 9.5s. Most of the energy is short-period NW windswell, with NNW and WNW lobes still filling in the gaps but lacking real power. The wind is the bigger problem: NNW, N and NW winds blow across the north-facing coast for a large part of the time, while ideal offshore S/SSW wind windows are limited to only 19-23 percent. There are still summer fun days, especially at dawn with an incoming tide, but this is not the season for serious surf missions.
