Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roars to life during autumn and winter, and Panton sits right in the firing line. From October through March, repeated extratropical cyclones roll east across the Atlantic, aiming a steady conveyor belt of long-period NW, WNW and NNW swell at this exposed NNW-facing stretch of the Spanish coast. Average wave heights in the heart of winter push to 10-11ft (3-3.3m), with periods commonly in the 12-second range - enough to send serious forerunners wrapping into the beach. The wind picture is not perfect, but the S/SW quadrant becomes noticeably more frequent during this period, giving Panton the combination of size and glassy offshore conditions it needs. This is the most consistent and powerful surf of the year, and the go-to window for experienced surfers.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)
As the storm track lifts north and the Azores High begins to assert itself in April and May, average swell drops to 5-8ft (1.5-2.4m) and periods slip to 9-11 seconds. The NW/WNW swell remains surprisingly regular, but the wind fields are more fickle: cold fronts are weaker, and the sea breeze or E/NE flow becomes a daily occurrence, cutting into wave quality. September marks the beginning of the seasonal turnaround, with the Atlantic waking back up and ideal wind percentages climbing to 25 per cent. These months are best for fun, rippable waves on a good board, with plenty of X-factor if a late-season or early-autumn storm takes aim.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quietest period for Panton. The Azores High locks in over the North Atlantic, suppressing the storm track, and average wave heights bottom out around 5ft (1.5m) with periods in the 8-9 second range - sometimes just short-period, wind-driven swell from the persistent NW windswell patterns. The good news is that NW and WNW groundswell can still slide through, but the prevailing NE/ENE flow and afternoon sea breezes make clean, offshore conditions rare, with ideal wind only 14-17 per cent of the time. During the heart of summer, look for early mornings and an incoming morning tide to catch the cleanest windows.
