These waves are fast, hollow, and best suited for a high-performance shortboard or bodyboard—locals on foam and handboards dominate the lineup. Swell breaks both left and right, with no consistent direction, making it a game of reflexes and positioning. Best Surf Season (October - March)

Playa de la Garita pulses with the North Atlantic's winter heartbeat. From October to March, the climatological storm track strengthens, sending angular groundswell down toward the Canaries. Average wave heights in these months regularly reach 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) and periods sit between 11 and 13 seconds, putting the beach in powerful long-period territory. The east-facing bay responds best when the swell trends from the W/SW, but the more prevalent WNW and NNW lines can also wrap well when the period holds. Wind is the perennial gatekeeper: the NE trades still blow often, but this window offers the highest percentage of offshore W/NW flow, especially in October. NAO-driven shifts in the North Atlantic storm track decide whether the Atlantic sends long-period pulses down to the islands or spins them out into the Bay of Biscay, making these months the most reliable for quality surf.
