Playa del Castillo seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The surf year at Playa del Castillo is dictated by the North Atlantic storm track. From October through March, the upper-level pattern becomes more dynamic, the Azores High retreats, and low-pressure systems roll toward Western Europe. Average swell heights sit in the 5-7ft (1.5-2.2m) range with periods climbing into the 11-13s band, giving the spot long-period, powerful ground swell. Directionally, NNW and NW dominate the wave rose, and while true west or WNW is the absolute magic angle for this west-facing beach, the NW/NNW energy still produces solid surf. Ideal wind windows are at their best, with 24-31 percent of the time falling into clean conditions. This is the season to circle on the calendar.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
April and September are bridge months. In April the Atlantic still has some winter left, but average periods drop to around 10.9s and the NNE wind flow starts to increase, cutting the ideal wind percentage to 13%. September is the mirror: the ocean wakes back up after summer with periods returning past 10s and ideal wind jumping to 23%, even though heights remain small. Both months can produce good sessions, especially when a late-season low or early-autumn cold front re-energizes the northwest swell window.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
Summer at Playa del Castillo is all about the Atlantic high-pressure system. May through August, the storm track retreats to high latitudes and the wave period drops to 8-9.5s, which means more choppy, average, punchy windswell than clean ground swell. Swell heights are not necessarily tiny-averaging 4-5ft (1.2-1.6m)-but the energy is shorter period and heavily influenced by the NNE trade wind. Ideal wind percentages sink to 4-10 percent through the heart of summer, making this a low season for quality, although it can still be fun on a groveler in the early mornings.
