Playa de Traba seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Playa de Traba is a classic North Atlantic winter wave magnet. As the Azores High retreats and the polar front storm track sags south, the Bay of Biscay and the exposed Costa da Morte receive a near-constant procession of WNW, NW and NNW groundswells. Average swells build to 9-11ft (2.8-3.3m) with periods in the powerful 11-13s range, and the offshore wind window (WSW, SW, SSW, S) is open 20-27% of the time. This is the bread and butter season: hefty, lined-up sandbar peaks with clean offshore texture when low pressure is well positioned over the Bay of Biscay or France.
Fair Surf Season (April - May, September)
The shoulder months offer a trade-off. Swell energy remains from the right direction - WNW through NNW still dominates - but average heights dip to 6-8ft (1.9-2.4m) and periods fall into the average-to-powerful 10-11s zone. The north-easterly trade wind regime starts to strengthen, making clean waves more of a waiting game. April and early May can still deliver winter-quality NW groundswell, while September marks the first serious flare-up of autumn as Atlantic lows begin to deepen again.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the slow season at Traba. The North Atlantic storm track shifts north, leaving northern Spain on the southern edge of the action. Swell heights drop to around 5ft (1.5-1.6m) and periods shorten to 8.5-9s, producing smaller, wind-affected peaks. The dominant NE and NNE winds add bump and cross-chop, and the ideal offshore wind percentage bottoms out at 12-15%. It is still surfable on the right day - especially when a decaying tropical swell or a rogue NW groundswell arrives - but consistency and quality are at their annual low.
