Playa Honda seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Playa Honda's best waves arrive when the North Atlantic starts to churn in autumn and stays active through early spring. During this window, average swell heights hold in the 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) range with periods of 11-13s, a solid upgrade from the summer months. October stands out with the highest amount of clean offshore wind at 34%, while November through February deliver the most raw power. The catch is that the waverose at Playa Honda is heavily weighted toward NNW, NNE and NW swell, which is partially shadowed by the island on a south-facing beach. The magic comes when slow-moving lows track farther south and push S/SSE/SW groundswell into the island - that is when the beach truly lights up. A negative NAO pattern is often the key, as it pulls Atlantic storm tracks south and increases the odds of those desirable southerly quadrant swells.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
These shoulder months offer a mixed bag. April and May see average periods drop from 10.6s to 9.1s, with the surf becoming more wind-driven and less powerful. Wave quality is still rideable, especially with 22% ideal offshore wind, but direct southern quadrant swell is rare and Playa Honda must rely on wrapped-around northerly energy. September is the pick of the transition months, with ideal wind at 28%, periods climbing back to 9.5s, and water temperatures still holding at a warm 22.9°C. The first autumn lows begin to inject some long-period energy, making September a surprisingly good month for clean, fun-sized surf.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quietest, most frustrating stretch of the year. Average periods drop to 7-8s and the swell becomes short-period, locally generated northerly windswell. The dominant NNE trade wind blows over 60% of the time in July, often at 30-40kph, which leaves Playa Honda windblown and sectiony. Ideal offshore wind collapses to just 4% in July and 9% in August. Unless a rare southerly or southern-hemisphere swell wraps in, expect small, grovelly waves in the 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) range on the best days - more summer fun than serious surfing.
