Best Surf Season (October - March)
Punta del Confital is a south-west-facing stretch of Atlantic coastline, and the best surf arrives when the North Atlantic storm track dips close enough to the Canary Islands to aim long-period swell at that SSW-to-W window. From October through March, average wave periods range from 11.4 to 12.6s - powerful, long-period territory - and the likelihood of a properly angled W/SW swell increases, peaking in December at nearly 3% of the total wave energy - still a narrow slice, but the most the yearly cycle offers. The average height stays around 6ft (1.8m) through the winter months, and although the wave rose is still dominated by northerly energy, the longer periods help it wrap more effectively into the bay. The north-east trade wind remains the prevailing offshore flow, keeping the surface workable on a good share of days. When a deep low spins up in the Atlantic and the NAO trends negative, storm tracks shift south and Confital can turn on with thick, powerful waves.
Fair Surf Season (April, May and September)
The shoulder months are a game of patience. April and May see the jet stream retreat north, average periods fall to 9.5-10.7s, and the swell direction becomes even more dominated by the north/north-west quadrant, with true SW-W groundswell dropping to nearly zero. September is the mirror image: the ocean is starting to wake up, periods climb back to 9.8s, the trades are strong and ideal wind reaches a yearly maximum of 66%. These months can deliver clean, fun-size waves, but they rarely produce the heavy, long-period, properly angled swell that truly lights up the reef at Confital.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the low-quality, not necessarily low-energy, season. Average wave periods drop to 7.6-8.4s, keeping the surf in the average, punchy, rideable range but robbing it of the long-period power and proper direction that Confital needs. The wave direction becomes almost exclusively northern - N/NNE/NNW account for 97-100% of the wave energy. True SSW-SW-WSW-W swell is essentially absent, and the average size sits at a modest 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m). The trade winds blow consistently offshore and the water is warm, which makes for beautiful-looking days, but Confital's longer walls need period and direction. It is longboard and fun-summer-session territory; for the heavy, high-performance waves this spot is known for, wait for autumn.
