When the North Atlantic settles into its winter rhythm, Salinas transforms into a dependable northwest-facing magnet for Atlantic groundswell. The Azores High weakens and retreats south, allowing low-pressure systems to barrel across the ocean toward the Bay of Biscay. Average swells sit at 5-6ft (1.5-1.7m) with periods in the 12s, and the swell window is dominated by NW, WNW and NNW directions that line up perfectly with the beach. Critically, the offshore sector (WSW through S) blows strongest and most often during this window, giving clean, lined-up waves. December's 60% ideal-wind score is the year's best, and January and February are the most energetic. Water temps dip to 12.8-13.8°C, so winter rubber is mandatory. This is when Salinas earns its reputation.
