Suicidios seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Suicidios is a classic north-coast Spanish stretch that comes alive when the North Atlantic starts flexing its muscles. From October to March, the eastward track of extratropical cyclones sends consistent ground swell from the NNW and NW straight into the exposed, north-northwest-facing beach. Average wave heights hover between 2.0 and 2.2m (6.5-7ft) with periods of 12-13s, and the windows of south/southwest offshore wind - though rare - create the kind of hollow, powerful waves that put the spot on the map. December and January are the most consistent months, with ideal surf wind up to 19% of the time. If you want size, watch for a negative NAO and a string of lows stacked across the Atlantic.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
Spring and autumn bring transition. April still sees solid NNW swell from slow-moving lows, but the north-northeast trade winds start to dominate, limiting the number of clean sessions. September is the bookend: the ocean is still warm and the first long-period pulses of a new season begin to arrive, but they can be flatter and less organized than winter. These months are best for intermediate surfers looking to avoid the heaviest days, with smaller crowds and a mix of average to good days.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is a frustrating time at Suicidios. The Azores High locks in, the jet retreats, and the Bay of Biscay turns into a windswell pond. Dominant NE winds blow onshore for days on end, making conditions choppy and sectiony. Swell heights average 1.4-1.6m (4.5-5ft) but with periods of 7-8s, the waves become fat, gutless, and difficult to ride. Water temps climb to 22-23°C, which means boardshorts are tempting, but the surf rarely offers anything better than sub-par groveling conditions. Only the rare tropical cyclone or eastward-strolling storm system can salvage the season.
