Verdicio seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Verdicio sits exposed to the gritty, open North Atlantic on the Asturian coast, and its NNW-facing sand feels the full force of the winter swell machine. From October through March the average wave height sits in the 1.5-1.7m (5-5.6ft) range and the average period rarely drops below 11.9s. This is the window for proper groundswell: low-pressure systems rolling across the Atlantic aim N, WNW and NW fetches straight at the beach. Those same systems often drag onshore N/NW winds behind them, so the best sessions happen when the post-frontal pressure gradient flips to a southerly or southwesterly flow, grooming the big lines and putting Verdicio's powerful, organized peaks on offer. Depending on the NAO phase, the storm track either rides northern latitudes or dips south toward Iberia; both can send long-period NW swell to Verdicio.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
April and September are transition months. April is still holding onto early-season energy with an average swell of 1.3m (4.3ft) and an average period of 10.7s, while September marks the first serious return of autumn swell at 1.1m (3.6ft) and 10.2s. The ocean is less relentless in these shoulder months, and the cleaner, softer conditions make them ideal for mid-lengths and step-up shortboards when the swell fills in. The percentage of offshore wind is moderate, so patience is the key.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
From May through August the Azores High settles in and the North Atlantic storm track retreats. Average wave heights drop to 0.8-1.0m (2.6-3.3ft) and periods shrink to 8.7-9.8s, producing largely small, summer-style surf. There are still plenty of rideable waves thanks to the consistent NW/NNW fetch, and early-morning conditions can be clean, but the heavy, powerful groundswell that makes Verdicio's reputation is largely absent. This is small-wave season, best suited to logs, fish and high-tide groveling.
