Best Surf Season (November - February)
Winter is where Xivares truly shines. As the North Atlantic storm track reaches its peak activity, deep low-pressure systems fuel long-period, powerful WNW-NNW swell trains that line up on the exposed north-facing beach. Average wave heights hover around 5.2-5.6ft (1.6-1.7m) with periods pushing 12-13s, giving the kind of power and length that gets you excited for dawn patrol. The kicker is the wind regime: the ideal offshore quadrant (S, SSW, SW) blows a surprisingly high percentage of the time - December and January see 58-61% clean windows. When the Azores High ridge connects with continental high pressure, the crisp offshore flow grooms the open faces to perfection. This is the time to chase Xivares at its best.
Fair Surf Season (October, March, April)
The shoulder months are a classic mix of hope and variability. October marks the initial roar of the Atlantic autumn, with average swell climbing to 4.3ft (1.3m) and periods stretching to 11.2s, while ideal wind is still at 48%. March and April are the fading echoes of winter's energy: still plenty of NW/NNW swell, but average heights drop to 4.3-4.9ft (1.3-1.5m) and periods shorten to 10.7-11.9s. The offshore wind probability decreases to 33-41% as the European continent warms up and the pressure gradients relax. You'll score fun, rippable waves, but consistency drops and you may have to work around increasing onshore tendencies.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
Summer at Xivares is a groveler's game. The North Atlantic storm track retreats to higher latitudes and the Azores High dominates, crushing the swell-producing machinery. Average wave heights bottom out at 2.6-3.6ft (0.8-1.1m), periods drop to 8.7-10.2s, and the wind frequently turns unfavorable from the N/NNW quadrant, leaving the beach windblown and bumpy. The saving grace is the warmer water (up to 20.4°C) and long summer days, but for real surf, this is the off-season - you'll be hunting for any leftover NW windswell that slips through the summer slop. June and July are the most challenging months, with ideal wind only 15-18% of the time.
