Zarautz faces straight into the teeth of the north-west Atlantic, and when autumn and winter extratropical storms start stacking up across the Bay of Biscay, the Basque coast lights up. From October through March the average swell stands at a solid 5-7ft (1.6-2.1m) with periods of 11-13s, and the NW/WNW/NNW swell window delivers exactly the direction this beach loves. The crucial ingredient is wind: a continental high over Iberia or a trailing cold front can set up clean offshore flow from the S/SSW, and during this six-month window ideal winds blow 36-45% of the time. Positive phases of the NAO tend to funnel a lively low-pressure track toward northern Spain, while high pressure anchored over France promotes the southerly land breezes that groom Zarautz into lines.
