Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic storm track reawakens in autumn, and Zurriola - a beach break that lives and dies by the northwest quadrant - comes alive. From October through March, average surf heights hold anywhere between 1.6m (5ft) and 2.1m (7ft), with long-period groundswells in the 11 to 13 second range being the norm. This is the true heart of the Basque surf year, driven by a strengthening Icelandic Low and a series of powerful extratropical cyclones that spin up the Bay of Biscay. Even better, the cold fronts that roll across the region typically deliver S to SW winds in their wake, keeping the offshore flow intact for a remarkable 40 to 46 percent of the time. When the NAO index runs positive, the winter storm track aligns squarely on the Bay of Biscay and Zurriola can fire for days on end.
Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)
The shoulder seasons offer a mellower take on Zurriola. April still sees 84 percent of the swell arriving from the NW, WNW and NNW window, but heights drop to an average of 1.5m (5ft) and periods ease to around 11 seconds. As spring advances into May, the Azores High begins to nudge northward and the swell field comes down to 1.2m (4ft) with periods dropping below 10 seconds. September provides a mirror image as the first autumn lows brush past the coast. These months remain perfectly surfable, with fun, rippable waves when the wind cooperates - just with less size, weaker period and a more fickle surface.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
The heart of summer brings Zurriola its most frustrating combination. The Azores High sits firmly over the eastern Atlantic, deflecting the North Atlantic storm track towards Iceland and Greenland. Mean swell heights bottom out near 1.0m (3ft) and periods shrink to a marginal 8.8 to 9.2 seconds - just barely on the rideable side of the period scale. Worse still, the thermal contrast that develops over the Iberian Peninsula establishes a near-daily NNW to NW sea breeze, which is exactly the onshore wind direction that turns this exposed beach into a choppy, closeout mess. Ideal surf conditions only occur around 18 to 22 percent of the time in summer, making it a season for longboards, foamies, or a road trip further north.
