Best Surf Season (February - April)
From February through April, the South Pacific storm track aligns with the trade-wind regime to create Maraa's most complete surf window. Average surf heights build from roughly 6ft (1.8m) in February to 7ft (2.1m) in April, while wave periods stretch to 12.9 seconds - ideal for this southwest-facing reef. Perhaps more importantly, the east to northeast offshore wind signal stays strong, keeping the wind favorable 38 to 42 percent of the time. S and SSW swells dominate the directional spectrum, with the entire S-to-W window accounting for as much as 53 percent of all recorded swell energy in March. The result is powerful, groomed, long-period surf that is both heavy and rippable.
Fair Surf Season (May - September)
May through September is the austral winter in full effect. The Southern Ocean cranks out the biggest swells of the year - average heights run 7 to 7.5ft (2.1 to 2.3m) with periods in the 12 to 13 second range. Maraa receives plenty of S and SSW groundswell, but the trade winds also strengthen, with ESE and SE directions becoming a persistent cross-shore presence. Ideal wind reliability drops to 24 to 31 percent, so while the raw power is there, clean conditions require careful timing - usually early morning before the trades build. This is charger territory.
Low Surf Season (October - January)
October to January marks the seasonal slowdown. The storm track retreats poleward, average swell heights fall to the 5.5 to 6.5ft (1.7 to 2.0m) range, and periods back off to 11 to 12 seconds. There is still plenty of rideable surf, especially in December when offshore winds blow an ideal 42 percent of the time, but the direction mix becomes increasingly dominated by SSE and SE trade swell rather than true S to SW groundswell. Tropical showers become a bigger factor late in the year. Expect smaller, often clean, but less powerful surf than the deep-season months.
