Best Surf Season (March - May)

As the South Pacific storm track pushes its peak energy through French Polynesia, Teahupoo finds its most complete combination of size, period and offshore wind. March and April are the standout months, with average periods of 12.6-12.7s and ideal offshore N/NE wind frequencies at 41% and 39% respectively. The swell rose also becomes heavily loaded toward direct S and SSW swell, meaning the waves arrive with real alignment and power all the way into the reef. May continues the heavy theme, though a strengthening ESE trade wind starts to eat into the clean windows.

Fair Surf Season (June - October)

Winter delivers the biggest average surf of the year-around 7-7.6ft (2.2-2.3m) from June through September-with long-period Southern Ocean groundswell rumbling in almost without pause. The trade-off is wind: the SE trades peak in strength, and ideal offshore conditions drop to only 22-29% of the time depending on the month. October remains very rideable, but the period has begun to ease back toward the summer baseline. This is the window when Teahupoo can live up to its heavy reputation, but waves are often more rugged than glassy.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

As summer returns to the South Pacific, the storm track backs off and average swell heights settle down to 5.6-6.2ft (1.7-1.9m) with periods in the 11.5-12.0s range. The direct S and SSW swell window becomes less consistent while ESE/SE trade swell and localized tropical disturbances take up more of the rose. Offshore wind percentages actually improve-especially December's 40%-so there are clean days with playful, barrelable waves, but the dependable XL-to-XXL Teahupoo is much harder to come by until the autumn transition kicks in again.
