Bude seasonal overview
Bude faces west into the teeth of the North Atlantic, so the surf here is ruled by the storm track. Through the year, the wave climate follows a simple rhythm: a feast of powerful winter groundswell, a mellow summer lull, and a spring/autumn transition that often hides the cleanest windows. The west-facing beach means west-northwest through west-southwest swells hit hard, while the best winds blow from the east - ENE, E, ESE and SE - keeping the surface glassy.
Best Surf Season (October - March)
From October through March, Bude is in prime position. Average swell heights climb from 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) in October to around 7ft (2.1m) in December, January and February, with periods ranging from 9 to 11 seconds. The North Atlantic low-pressure track fires storm after storm at the UK, and Bude's open west-facing beach collects that energy in the form of powerful WSWS, W and WNW groundswell. The catch is wind: these same lows often bring onshore WSW/W winds. The best days come when a high-pressure ridge builds in from the east, delivering offshore ENE-E-ESE-SE winds while the swell is still heavy. This is when Bude truly becomes a serious winter wave.
Fair Surf Season (April - May, September)
April and May are shoulder-season months. The Atlantic is still lingering, but average swell drops to about 4ft (1.3m) or less, with shorter periods around 8.5-9.5 seconds. The good news is that offshore wind windows become more common - around 27-29% - so you can find clean, rippable waves on a longboard or shortboard when the swell lines up. September is the real gem of the fair season: the ocean is still holding summer warmth, but the first autumn lows spin up again and Bude starts to see 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) groundswell before the winter chaos sets in.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
June through August is the low season at Bude. The Azores High tends to ridge across the UK, suppressing the Atlantic storm track and leaving small, short-period W/NW windswell. Average wave heights drop to around 3-4ft (1.0-1.1m) and periods sit near 8 seconds. Ideal offshore wind is scarce - only 15-19% of the time - while westerly and northwesterly onshore winds dominate. Summer surf at Bude is for the stubborn and the patient: small, fun-sized peaks early in the morning before the sea breeze kicks up, with the occasional ex-hurricane swell providing a surprise in August and early September.
