October: The Autumn Engine Turns Over

October is when the North Atlantic roars back to life. Average swell height jumps to 4ft (1.2m), period climbs to 8.6s, and the directional distribution improves noticeably for Langland. SW swell reaches 12.3% of all observations, with SSW adding 4.0% and S adding 1.9%; that is the largest direct swell window of the year. Because Langland faces south, these S/SSW/SW swells hit the beach far more efficiently than the dominant WSW/W swells. The average height is still modest, but the character of the swell is more favorable.

Wind remains the wildcard. Ideal offshore wind sits at only 11%, and the SW-W quadrant still delivers plenty of cross-onshore days. Precipitation increases to 3.69 mm/day as Atlantic fronts roll through, air temperature cools to 11.9°C, and water remains pleasant at 14.8°C. When a negative NAO pattern sets in, high pressure can sit over Scandinavia and drive clean N/NE winds - that is when October produces the standout sessions of the season.
