Newgale

Stretching across the northern edge of St Brides Bay, Newgale is a sprawling, west-facing beachbreak that offers an immense canvas of potential. Its sand bottom gives way to shifting shingle at high tide, creating dynamic, ever-changing banks that hold consistent surf year-round. The sheer scale of the beach means there’s always room to escape the crowd, with the northern end consistently drawing the largest swells as they bend around the coast. This is a spot that rewards patience and local knowledge—a true all-rounder that can handle a wide range of conditions, from clean, long-period groundswells to more raw, wind-affected lines. Best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers, Newgale generates powerful, hollow waves when the swell window opens from the west, northwest, or southwest. The tides play a critical role: low tide exposes more defined peaks, while high tide can turn the shingle into a steep, fast-breaking ridge. Light easterly winds are ideal, grooming the faces across this expansive arena. Best Surf Season (October - March)

Newgale's west-southwest facing beach is a perfect storm-catching platform when the North Atlantic storm track aims its low pressure systems at the UK. From October through March, the average swell height sits at 4-5ft (1.3-1.6m) and the average period runs from 8 to 9 seconds, with frequent pulses into the powerful 10-14 second band. The swell rose is dominated by SSW through W directions, with WSW the clear leader, and this matches Newgale's exposure nearly perfectly. Positive winter NAO phases tend to strengthen the westerly storm conveyor, delivering bigger groundswell but also increasing the chance of onshore WSW-SW winds. By contrast, negative NAO blocks can bring dry easterly offshore flow and cleaner, though occasionally smaller, conditions. With the ideal offshore wind only blowing about 7-10 percent of the time, winter is a game of patience: when a transient high pressure ridge slides in behind a deep low, the beach turns firing.
