Best Surf Season (October - March)

Portrush's northwest-facing coastline is a magnet for North Atlantic groundswell, and from October through March the Icelandic Low turns the ocean on. Average wave heights sit in the solid 5-8ft (1.5-2.4m) zone with periods regularly stretching past 10s, and the swell rose is dominated by exactly what this beach wants: W, WNW and NW energy. Watch the NAO too - positive phases spin low after low toward Ireland and stack up the swell, while negative phases can park high pressure over Scandinavia and flip the wind into the E/SE offshore quadrant. The catch is that the same westerly energy that lights up Portrush is frequently accompanied by onshore W and NW winds, so the best days arrive in tight, cold, glassy windows.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September are transitional months when the ocean hasn't fully committed to either summer or winter. Average swells come in around 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) with periods of 9-10s, which is enough to make Portrush turn on without the brutal winter battlefield. April often delivers clean, lined-up WNW groundswell under spring high pressure, while September marks the first real rumble of autumn as early lows reappear in the North Atlantic. Ideal offshore wind percentages climb to 16-18%, making these the most user-friendly months of the year for quality waves at this spot.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer in Northern Ireland is not about chasing size. From May through August the Azores High suppresses the storm track, average swell height drops to around 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) and periods dip below 9s. The directional picture still shows plenty of W and WNW swell, but most of it is short-period, locally wind-generated chop rather than organised groundswell. Although ideal offshore E/SE winds are more common than in winter, the northwest-facing beach is also exposed to summer sea breezes from NNW and NW. Bottom line: keep the fish and the longboard handy, and stay patient for the odd summer low-pressure surprise.
