Best Surf Season (October - March)

Sennen Cove is a northwest-facing slab of Cornish coastline, and when the North Atlantic switches on in autumn and winter, it receives the full brunt of some of the most consistent and powerful swell in the UK. From October through March, average swell heights run 6-8ft (1.8-2.5m) with wave periods regularly pushing 10-12s, thanks to a climatological increase in strong extratropical cyclones tracking between Greenland and the UK. A strongly positive North Atlantic Oscillation often enhances this westerly storm track, sending bigger and more consistent swell to Cornish shores. The flip side is that these same storm systems drag westerly and northwesterly winds across the bay, so clean waves are not guaranteed. The magic happens when a low pressure system exits to the north and a ridge of high pressure builds in, producing offshore south or southwest winds and letting the long-period WNW/NW swell wrap into the bay in beautiful, glassy lines. These months are the prime time to score Sennen at its best.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

During the shoulder months, the atmospheric engine begins to slow or just wake up. April and May still see plenty of W and WSW groundswell, but average heights decrease to 4-5ft (1.4-1.6m) and periods drop to 9-10s. September mirrors that as the first autumn lows begin to stir. Wind is ideal around 15 percent of the time, and with lighter winds and warmer temperatures, you can often find clean, rippable waves on a shortboard or funboard. This is a great window for less experienced surfers and anyone wanting to avoid the winter crowds and cold.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer brings high pressure and a dramatic reduction in North Atlantic storm activity. Average swell heights fall to 4ft (1.2m), and periods shorten to 8.2-8.7s, leaving mostly small, often wind-affected conditions. The surf is rarely flat, as a steady diet of westerly swells continues to wrap into the coast, but W, WNW, and NW winds frequently blow onshore and chop up whatever waves are there. Ideal offshore winds clock in just 12-14 percent of the time. For the dedicated surfer, a longboard and dawn patrol are the keys to finding clean, fun-sized summer waves.
