Best Surf Season (October - March)

Thurso East is the jewel of the Scottish north coast, and when the North Atlantic switches on, it is a serious - and seriously cold - destination. From October through March, average swell heights sit between 1.6m and 2.1m (5-7ft), with periods routinely in the 10-12s range. This is the window when strong extratropical cyclones rolling east between Greenland and Scotland aim long-period N, NNE, NW and NNW swell straight into the exposed reef. The prevailing westerly-to-southwesterly storm track often brings wind with the waves, but when low pressure slips north or east and a high-pressure wedge delivers offshore S/SE winds, Thurso East lives up to its reputation: powerful, heaving right-hand walls grinding down the reef.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

During these transition months, the Atlantic still coughs up solid swell. April averages 1.4m (4.5ft) at 10.3s, while September's early-autumn lows can generate 1.3m (4.5ft) at 9.8s. The percentage of north and northwesterly swell actually increases - over 30% of readings in April and May come from the optimal northern window - but the periods are shorter and the heights are more inconsistent. May still sees plenty of 0.5-1.5m (2-5ft) waves and improved water temps; it's a good time for a thick spring suit and some bragging rights before summer truly shuts down.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the quietest chapter. Average heights drop to 0.9-1.0m (3ft) and periods fall under 8.5s, meaning lumpy, short-period windswell dominates. The calmest month, July, is also the most onshore; frequent W and WNW swells combine with westerly and northwesterly breezes to leave the reef often flat or storm-washed. Even if the water warms to a balmy 13-14°C (55-57°F) and the air reaches the low 20s, a good surfer must pick their window carefully. When an early summer N or NNW pulse coincides with a S/SE offshore breeze, there can be some clean, punchy 3-4ft days - but these are exceptions, not the rule.
