August: Late Summer Lull and the First Pulse

August remains low season at Woolacombe, but the first subtle signs of autumn appear under the surface. Average swell is 3.6ft (1.1m) with a 7.9s period, still short-period and summer-like. W swell dominates with 44.4 percent, and WSW adds 24.5 percent, keeping the beach exposed. There is slightly more energy than July, but it is mostly 3-5ft (1-1.5m) waves rather than anything meaningfully powerful. Winds are still dominated by W, WSW, WNW and NW, with a combined onshore component near 49 percent; ideal offshore wind sits at just 10 percent. However, late-August cold fronts occasionally dip farther south, producing a stronger WSW or W swell pulse with periods lifting past 10s. If this aligns with an ENE or E wind, Woolacombe can suddenly produce unexpected 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) peaks on a dropping tide. Water temperature peaks at 17.8C, air averages 16.1C and rain is moderate. Keep the shortboard handy because the transition is closer than it looks.
