Aviones seasonal overview
Aviones is a north-facing tropical beach break that lives on short-period trade windswell. Year-round, the swell roses are dominated by E and ESE energy with average periods stuck between 5.9 and 6.2 seconds and average heights hovering around 0.8-0.9m (2-3ft). That means the default wave is a small, punchy, occasionally groveling beach break rather than a deep-water North Atlantic groundswell magnet. The quality at Aviones is therefore determined more by wind than by swell size, and the months with the highest percentage of light S/SW offshore winds are the ones that stand out.
Best Surf Season (May - June & September - October)
Spring and early autumn deliver the most consistent clean windows. The east-southeast trades continue to supply energy, but the ideal surf wind percentage climbs to 40-49 percent, bringing lighter cross-offshore and S/SW flow. The surf stays small, mostly 0.7-0.9m (2-3ft), but the surface texture is smoother, making the short-period peaks far more rideable. These are the best months to paddle out with a fish or shortboard and make the most of the trade-wind swell.
Fair Surf Season (April, July, August, November)
These months sit between the cleanest windows and the choppy winter grind. April and November see moderate clean-wind percentages around 31-37 percent, while July and August have more trade-wind energy but also stronger E winds and more chop. The spot is rarely flat, but consistency is broken by periods of lumpy, cross-shore conditions, so reading the wind forecast becomes essential.
Low Surf Season (December - March)
Winter is the hardest stretch at Aviones. Average heights nudge up to 0.9m (3ft) and periods reach 6.2s, but ideal wind drops to 25-31 percent. Cold fronts moving through the western North Atlantic can flip winds into the N/NNE quadrant, turning the north-facing beach into a bumpy mess. The North Atlantic does generate long-period groundswell, but Aviones often gets caught with the wrong combination: short-period easterly windsea mixed with onshore winds. When a negative NAO pattern aligns a proper N/NW groundswell with a S/SW offshore breeze, the spot can fire, but those windows are rare and fleeting.
