Brookings seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Pacific roars to life in late autumn and stays angry through winter. From October through March, Brookings sees its biggest and most consistent groundswell, with average heights ranging from 7.5ft (2.3m) in October to nearly 10ft (3.0m) in December and long-period energy in the 11.7-12.9s window. The dominant swell directions are W and WNW, with occasional WSW and SW pulses - and when that west-southwest window aligns with the Southwest-facing beach, the cove is at its best. The catch is wind: winter lows also drag in SSE/S southerlies, so the wave quality is largely determined by how often the pressure gradient allows N-NE offshore flow. Still, this is the season for serious, heavy waves.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
These transitional months offer the best blend of leftover or nascent swell and improving winds. April still holds 7.5ft (2.3m) average swell at 11.7s, while May drops to 6.6ft (2.0m) and 10.6s. September is the mirror image, with the first autumn groundswell pulses arriving as the North Pacific High finally weakens. The window is smaller and less consistent than winter, but water temperatures are more comfortable, rainfall is lower, and there are plenty of clean, mid-size days.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quietest time of year. High pressure dominates, the storm track retreats north, and average swell heights sink to 5.9-6.2ft (1.8-1.9m) with periods in the 9.1-9.9s range - riding the line between average windswell and long-period groundswell. The dominant NW-NNW summer pulse is short-period and often mushy, but it is consistently groomed by strong north winds. It won't be pumping, but Brookings rarely goes completely flat.
