Best Surf Season (December - March)
The North Atlantic winter machine gets firing during these months. Swell heights climb to the 1.5-1.6m (5-5.5ft) range with average periods of 10 seconds, and the chance of seeing a clean, long-period pulse from the NNW - the only favorable direction from the W/NW quadrant - is at its highest. While the typical Caribbean trade wind regime keeps the surface reasonably clean around 62-64% of the time, it is the arrival of occasional cold-front-driven NW groundswell that truly brings Domes to life. If the winds align from the E/ESE, you get that glassy, ripped-yet-fast texture that the spot is known for.
Fair Surf Season (October - November, April - May)
During these shoulder months, Domes is caught between seasons. In autumn, the Atlantic hurricane season still rumbles, and early winter swell starts to appear, while the trades are still light and often offshore (ideal wind 70-83%). Spring sees the opposite: the big North Atlantic lows are fading, but the swell out of the NE/ENE is still consistent enough to wrap into the bay. Wave heights average 1.1-1.5m (3.5-5ft). However, the angle is often not optimal; you may need to search for the sandbar or reef peak that handles the bounce off the east swell. Still, when the wind is light and the period is up, these months offer some hidden gems.
Low Surf Season (June - September)
Summer is the doldrums for Domes. With average swell heights dropping to 1.0-1.1m (3-3.5ft) and periods shrinking to just 7-9 seconds, the spot turns into a small-wave groveler. The dominant swell direction shifts strongly to ENE and E, which doesn't fit the WNW-facing break. The trade winds are at their strongest and most consistent - ideal wind frequency of 81-89% - but there is simply not enough energy in the water. Occasional tropical storms or hurricanes can fire up some solid short-period swell, but those are rare and often accompanied by stormy winds. For the most part, summer is for longboarding, sunset sessions, and scoring the occasional glassy, fun-sized wave on the inside.
