Best Surf Season (November - March)

Gas Chambers sits at an awkward west-southwest angle, which means the true magic only comes when swell sneaks into the W/SW window. The months from November through March are the strongest of the year, with average swell heights around 5ft (1.5m) and wave periods holding at 10.0s. North Atlantic low pressure systems become more active, and the resulting NE/NNE/ENE groundswell ramps up. The same pressure gradient that sends the swell also cranks up the ENE trade winds, and since those winds are offshore at Gas Chambers, the surface can quickly turn lumpy. With ideal wind only 38-49% of the time in these months, the dawn and dusk windows are critical. The preferred W/SW/WNW groundswell remains rare, but this is still the most powerful and consistent time of year at the break.

Fair Surf Season (April - May and October)

As the winter pressure gradient loosens, Gas Chambers trades raw size for cleaner conditions. April and May see average swell heights drop to 3-5ft (1-1.5m) and periods ease to 8.7-9.6s, but the wind is ideal 54-64% of the time. October is the standout fair-month: period jumps back to 10.0s, the northeast groundswell machine starts to stir, and the ideal wind percentage reaches 67%. It is still not the preferred W/SW swell, but the combination of clean offshore ENE/E winds and long-period wrap-around energy makes October a sneaky-good month. If you want quality without the winter crowd, these are the windows.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

Summer is the trade-wind lull at Gas Chambers. From June through September, average swell heights stay around 3ft (1m), periods shrink to 6.7-9.1s, and the energy is almost entirely short-period ENE/E windswell. The spot becomes a groveling, longboard-friendly zone rather than a critical reefbreak. Wind is ideal a high percentage of the time-especially in June and September-but the ocean simply lacks the period and power to make Gas Chambers fire. The exception is when tropical waves or hurricanes spin up in the Atlantic and deliver more organized easterly pulses. Overall, these are the months for small-wave equipment and patience.
