November: Heavy Water and Full-On Storm Surf

November is the beginning of Gold Beach's true winter season. The average swell height jumps to 8ft (2.5m) with a powerful 12.1s period, driven by a storm track that is now firmly aimed at the Pacific Northwest. W and WNW swells dominate the mix, totaling around 40 percent of directional observations, while WSW and SW lines provide more of the ideal angle for the beach. Episodes of 8ft+ (2.5m+) swell become frequent, and the open exposure can produce heavy, demanding surf. Wind conditions are still a mixed bag, but the ideal wind percentage reaches 30 percent - the highest of the year along with December - as NNE winds at 11.2 percent and E/NE offshore events provide more opportunities between frontal passages. On the flip side, S winds at 17.6 percent and SSE at 13.6 percent can absolutely ruin a session with onshore bump. Air temps drop to 9.3°C, precipitation ramps up to 7.61mm/day and water temp cools to 11.1°C. November rewards those who are willing to sit out the storms and take advantage of the clean post-frontal swell.
