December: The Peak of the Surf Season Arrives

December is the strongest month of the year for Guajataca's north-facing potential. Average swell height is 0.7m and average period pushes up to 6.8s, while the combined N, NNE, NE and NNW swell share reaches the annual peak near 7.7%. The dominant ESE trades are still present at 60.5%, but the north swell window is now open with more consistency, and the 2-3ft (0.5-1m) range holds most of the best waves, with occasional 3-5ft (1-1.5m) sets. Trade winds are strong, with ENE at 42.8% and E at 30.1%, giving the spot plenty of bumpy days; ideal wind is only 11%, so timing a low-tide dawn patrol around a light SSW/SW offshore breeze is essential. When winter fronts drive down from the North Atlantic and the NAO dips negative, Guajataca can be surprisingly good. Water temperature is still warm at 27.3°C and air temperatures average 25.5°C (21.1-31.4°C), making winter waves that much more enjoyable.
