January: Winter's Peak Potential

January is the heart of the Hawaiian winter, when the North Pacific storm track throws a steady stream of low-pressure systems at the island chain. With an average swell height of 8ft (2.4m) and an average period of 12.4s, there is plenty of power in the water. The swell rose shows a strong NNW component (20.4%) alongside healthy NNE and NE contributions, while the ENE wind swell chunk also delivers from the optimal direction. This is a month of shifting basins: north pulse energy wraps onto the east side while trade swell filters in from ENE.

Wind is still the tricky part. The trades blow from ENE 19.4% of the time and from E 14.9%, putting the surface squarely onshore. But ideal offshore flow from W/WNW/NW occurs 24% of the time, making January the most likely month for clean conditions. When the trades ease overnight or a passing low flips the wind to the west, Kealia can offer powerful, long-period set waves in the 6-10ft (1.8-3m) range with water at 24.2°C. Expect 2.19mm/day of rain and air temps around 23°C; a flurry of showers often passes with the fronts.
