Best Surf Season (November - March)

Los Tubos, a northwest-facing reef/beach stretch along Puerto Rico's north coast, owes its best surf to the North Atlantic's winter engine. From November through March, cold fronts and strong high-pressure systems push trade-wind energy across the western Atlantic, producing average wave heights around 5.5-6ft (1.7-1.8m) and a much higher percentage of 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) surf than the rest of the year. The swell window is dominated by ENE and NE directions in the data, with a small but meaningful sprinkling of N and NNW swell; for this NW-facing exposure, the key is that the trade-wind swell is persistent and the wind stays mostly non-onshore. Periods in the 6.2-6.5s range mean the surf is punchy rather than heavy, so the very best days are when a true long-period NW pulse or a cold-front windswell lines up with light south/southwest winds. Reported ideal wind frequency sits at 67-72%, so clean sessions are frequent even though pure offshore S/SW winds are rare.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

During April and October, the Atlantic storm tracks are shifting, and average heights settle at a still-rideable 5ft (1.4-1.5m). The dominant direction becomes more easterly, with ENE/NE swell still supplying most of the energy, while N/NNW groundswell becomes scarce. April benefits from cooler, drier air and water temperatures near 26.7°C, while October sees the highest reported ideal wind frequency of 86% and can host late-season tropical swells and early fall NW pulses. Expect 3-5ft (1-1.5m) surf on most days with the occasional 6ft (1.8m) day when a synoptic system delivers more push.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

The summer months are the small-wave season at Los Tubos. The North Atlantic's mid-latitude storm track retreats and tropical trade-wind swell, mostly from the ENE, dominates the data; average heights drop to 4-4.5ft (1.2-1.4m). This is a good period for fun, grovel-y sessions on a high-performance shortboard-especially because onshore N/NW flow is nearly nonexistent and the reported ideal wind frequency climbs to 75-84%. But the average period hovers near 6s, and water temperatures reach a steamy 28-29°C (82-84°F). During the heart of summer, the spot is more about clean practice waves than serious hollow tubes; the game-changer is a tropical cyclone passing far enough north to send a strong, clean ENE/NE pulse into the island.
