Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (November - March)

Maria's is a west-southwest-facing break, so the most exciting surf at this spot comes when long-period westerly quadrant swell meets a clean offshore flow. The regional data show that the late autumn and winter months are the clear standouts. From November through March, average wave heights climb to around 5ft (1.5m) and periods hold near 10 seconds, placing Maria's in the powerful long-period range. Cold fronts and mid-latitude cyclones spinning across the North Atlantic, often enhanced by a favorable NAO pattern, inject pulses of larger NE-ENE swell into the island chain. Those pulses, although not from the ideal SW-W window, carry enough size and period to put Maria's on the map. Offshore wind percentages remain solid in the mid-60s, and the sea surface temperature is a comfortable 26-28°C, making this the most reliable time of year for head-high-plus surf.
