Best Surf Season (October - March)

Ormond Beach faces east-northeast, and that orientation tells you almost everything about how the surf works here. From October through March, the western Atlantic becomes a battleground of cold fronts and developing coastal lows, and the NE-ENE-E swell window stays active with a steady diet of windswell and occasional groundswell. Average wave heights hold around 2-3ft (0.7m) with periods in the 8-8.5s range, which is punchy, rideable and often surprisingly fun for a beach that skips the massive winter swells of the northern latitudes. The real gold is the wind: 17-21 percent of the time in these months the breeze is blowing from the southwest through west, meaning clean offshore or sideshore-offshore conditions while E/NE swell rolls straight into the beach. In a negative NAO pattern, cold fronts tend to dig deeper into the Southeast, and that is the recipe for repeated glassy mornings with 2-4ft peaks.

Fair Surf Season (April, May & September)

The shoulder months are a mixed bag. April and May see the Bermuda High begin to build, winds veer into E and SE, and the average wave height eases to around 2ft (0.6m) with periods near 8s. Surfable but inconsistent, these months require you to pick off early morning windows before the seabreeze ruins things. September is the exception: though the wind stats look poor on paper, the tropical cyclone season can deliver longer-period E/ENE swell and 3-5ft (0.9-1.5m) surf if a hurricane or disturbance lines up right. But you will pay for it with onshore ENE winds more often than not.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

June through August is the true summer lull. Average swell height drops to 1-2ft (0.3-0.5m), periods hover in the 7.7-8.2s range, and the wave clock is dominated by local sea breeze windswell from ESE and SE. The ideal wind percentage collapses to just 6-8 percent. The water is bathwater warm at 27-28°C, but unless a tropical system stirs up the Atlantic, Ormond Beach is more of a longboarding and beginner zone than a performance wave destination.
