July: Peak Summer Sulk

July is the flattest month of the year at Picnic Tables. The average swell height remains at 1.5ft (0.5m), though the period nudges up to 8.0s. The swell rose is actually even more directionally ideal than winter: ESE leads at 45 percent, E at 37 percent, ENE at 7 percent and NE at 2 percent. However, more than half of all readings are under 1.5ft (0.5m), and most of what remains is small 1.5-3ft (0.5-1m) windswell.

With the Atlantic high parked in the subtropics, winds are dominated by ESE at 14 percent, SE at 13 percent, SSE at 11 percent and S/SSW at 10 percent each. Ideal offshore SW/W winds only blow 8 percent of the time. Even on calm days, the lack of groundswell makes it a grovel-fest. A hurricane passing well offshore can inject a few long-period ESE pulses, but those are rare. For the most part, July is for beach days, not surf days. Water temp peaks at 28.1°C, air temps average 27.9°C, and precipitation is heavy at 5.75 mm/day.
