October: The North Atlantic Roars to Life

The North Atlantic roars to life during the month of October and Ponce Inlet feels it directly. The average swell height jumps to 1.3m (4.3ft), with the period humming at 8.4s. Nowhere is the directional focus sharper: ENE produces 34.9% of the waves, E 24.9%, and NE 17.5% - together with NNE, over 83% of all swell approaches from the optimal east-to-northeast quadrant. Extratropical storms off the U.S. East Coast and the first significant tropical activity drive these powerful, long-period pulses.

However, October is the cruelest month for wind. Ideal offshore flow is only 23%, the lowest of the entire year, as the pressure gradient strengthens between the Bermuda High and developing mainland lows. Onshore ENE/NE winds dominate, making many days lumpy and raw. Still, when the gradient relaxes or a cold front sweeps through and the wind clocks to W/SW, the resulting combination of juice and clarity is worth the wait.
