The wave demands respect—mid to high tide is your window to navigate the reef's hidden hazards, while a big swell can turn this lineup into a serious challenge. Prepare accordingly. Waves here typically run chest to overhead, around 1 to 2 meters, with the best action coming from north, north-northwest, and north-northeast swells. It handles swell sizes from about 1 meter (3 feet) up to 2 meters (6 feet) and prefers southeast to southwest winds. The result is a fast, hollow left that rewards intermediate to expert surfers with long, rippable walls. Early mornings are prime—light winds and thinner crowds before the trade winds fill in. Access is straightforward, but expect company during peak hours. A strong local presence is part of the vibe, so bring respect and a good attitude. Board choice is flexible: shortboard, funboard, longboard, fish, or even a bodyboard can work depending on conditions. Autumn and winter deliver the most consistent swells, so keep a close eye on the forecast to time your session right.

Best Surf Season (May - June & September - October)

San Juan is not a spot where you chase huge swell - you chase surface conditions. The dominant E/ESE trade-wind regime is poorly aligned with this NNE-facing beach, so the best surfing comes when the winds relax and the texture cleans up. May and October lead the way with 40% and 37% ideal/offshore conditions, while June and September add 35% and 32% as transition months. Surf heights sit mostly in the 2-3ft (0.7-0.9m) range with average 6s periods, so expect small, rippable, fun-shaped waves rather than power. A longboard or groveler will be your best friend.
