January is a genuine winter month on the Space Coast. Average swell height sits at 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) with a period around 8.2s, so the default is punchy, rideable windswell mixed with occasional longer-period groundswell. The primary energy comes from E at 21.9%, ENE at 15.8% and NE at 13.5%, meaning the beach is well exposed to the swell that matters. Most waves fall in the 1-3ft (0.3-0.9m) range, but some 3-5ft (0.9-1.5m) sets arrive out of E, ENE and NE as the western Atlantic gets active. The catch is wind: ideal offshore flow only ticks up 15% of the time, with onshore E/ENE/ESE winds around 23% and strong NNW/NW bursts often following cold fronts. Those post-frontal windows with SW/W/WNW winds are the jewels of the month. Water temperature is near 70F (21.0C) and air temps average 64F (17.6C), so winter rubber is still in play.
