Seal Beach seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - March)
The winter months are Seal Beach's most consistent and most rideable. The North Pacific storm track fires up, sending long-period west and west-southwest swell toward the Southern California Bight. Average wave heights run 2-3ft (0.8-1.0m), but these are not short-period wind slop: most swells arrive with 12-13s periods, giving the SSW-facing beach clean, power-packed lines. Even more important, the high pressure that builds over the Great Basin occasionally sets up offshore N, NE and NNW winds - the idealized grooming breeze for this stretch of sand. December, January and February offer the highest percentage of clean wind windows (40-50%), and even when the surf is small, a morning low-tide session on a NE offshore wind can produce rippable shoulders.
Fair Surf Season (April & October)
These shoulder months sit between two very different swell regimes. April still has winter's residual west energy in the water with average periods near 13.4s, but the afternoon sea breeze starts to kick in, dropping ideal wind to about 15%. October is the mirror image: southern hemisphere SSW/SW swell is still present, and as the thermal trough weakens, early-season offshore gradients allow clean mornings before the onshore flow builds. You won't find the same consistency as midwinter, but the magnetic windows are there for the dawn patrol.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
Summer is the frustrating flip side of Seal Beach. The swell direction is actually ideal - SSW and SW pulses from the southern hemisphere make up the bulk of the wave rose - and periods remain long and powerful in the 13-14s range. Unfortunately, the same southwest quadrant that sends the swell also produces the prevailing wind. With ideal wind percentages dropping to just 1-3% from June through August, the ocean turns into a textured, onshore-blown bump by late morning. Early mornings can offer clean conditions before the southwest sea breeze and thermal low take over, but the overall quality is inconsistent and heavily wind-dependent.
