January: Big Winter Machines

January delivers the full North Atlantic punch. Average swell heights hold near 9-10ft (2.9m) with a powerful 11.8s period, so there is no shortage of raw energy. The dominant swell directions are SW and WSW, which combine for roughly 20% of the observations, while true E through SSE swell is scarce at barely 3%. Since Shoals Point faces SE, a good deal of that westerly groundswell wraps into the beach, but it is the rarer E/SE swell that lights up the banks most efficiently. Wind is the main limiting factor: ESE, SE, and SSE winds combine for around 35% of the time, usually putting a nasty chop on the surface. Only 14% of observations show ideal offshore W-NW flow, typically in the aftermath of a cold front. When that offshore window aligns with a 12-second WSW swell, expect firing 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) waves with winter clarity. Air temperatures average just 1.9°C, precipitation is frequent at 7.67 mm/day, and water temperature sits at 5.7°C, so a serious winter wetsuit is non-negotiable.
