Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Pacific roars to life during October and reaches full power by December through March. With the Aleutian Low strengthening and low-pressure systems parading across the Gulf of Alaska, long-period WNW groundswell pulses roll into Santa Cruz with average heights around 6-7ft (1.8-2.1m) and periods of 12-14 seconds. Steady offshore winds from the N/NW quadrant keep the Lane's south-facing nook glassy, especially in the mornings. This is the window where the biggest, most powerful and most consistent surf of the year lines up with rideable winds. Frequent winter storms bring rain and cold air, but each retreating front often leaves behind clean N/NW flow and building swell.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

These transition months ease the pace: average swells shrink to roughly 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m), periods settle to 11-12 seconds, and the subtropical high begins to take over. Winds become lighter and more often offshore, so conditions are beautiful even when the size is less dramatic. April can still deliver overhead WNW swells, while May and September offer fun, clean, rippable waves with only occasional bigger pulses.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer sees the North Pacific storm track retreat north, leaving the Central Coast pinned under a strong Pacific High. Average surf drops to 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) with periods around 11 seconds. The dominant swell remains WNW windswell/groundswell, but the energy is lower and surf is smaller. The silver lining is superb conditions: offshore N/NW winds are frequent, mornings are glassy, water temp warms to 13-14°C (55-57°F), and rain virtually disappears. It may not be big, but it is clean.
