Best Surf Season (April - August)
Avalon swings into its cleanest, most consistent groove as the Tasman Sea cranks up during autumn and winter. Average swell periods rise from 8.1s in summer to 9.2-9.5s in the April-August stretch, and the wind distribution becomes much friendlier to this southeast-facing beach. Western offshore flow from W, WNW, NW and NNW appears more regularly, pushing the percentage of ideal wind to a seasonal high of 42% in July and keeping it at or above 34% for most of this window. Swell arrives steadily from E/ESE/SE/SSE, delivering clean, punchy 3-5ft (1-1.5m) surf and regular 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) pulses when Tasman lows crank.
Fair Surf Season (September - November)
Spring is the shoulder season. The Tasman High drifts back, and the NE/ENE sea breeze strengthens, so clean windows become shorter. Ideal wind drops from 37% in September to 26% in November, while the average wave period fades from 8.9s to 8.1s. There can still be excellent mornings, particularly when E/SE trade swell combines with a reluctant W/NW breeze, but the surf is generally smaller, shorter-period and more wind-affected than in the winter months.
Low Surf Season (December - March)
Summer at Avalon is the low end of the quality scale, though not necessarily the size scale. Average swell heights hover around 1.3-1.4m (4.3-4.6ft), but the period drops to 8.1-9.0s and ideal offshore wind plummets to 21-27%. Persistent NE/ENE winds and the afternoon SSE/SE sea breeze are the main villains, turning the surface lumpy and making it harder to find clean shape. Still, dawn patrol during E/SE swell events with a W/NW wind can salvage some fun, glassy sessions.
