While it may not serve up perfection every session, its sand-bottom peaks—offering both lefts and rights—can produce fun, rippable waves when conditions align. The beach is easily scouted from the surrounding headland, and the rabbit warren car park provides ample parking for those early-morning missions. Optimal swell direction is from the southeast, though it also handles northeast and south swells. The break handles swell as small as 1 foot (0.3 meters), offering forgiving waves for beginners to find their feet. For the best quality, look for peaky east swells groomed by a west wind during low to mid tides—this combo often delivers clean, user-friendly lines. That said, Curl Curl isn’t without its challenges. Strong rips can catch the unwary, and crowds pack in quickly on any decent day. The wind machine shifts in late autumn, and Curl Curl starts to deliver. Average swell heights hold between 5-6ft (1.6-1.8m) while periods climb to 9.5-9.7s, putting more punch behind each set. The big change is the wind: offshore W, WNW, NW and NNW flow becomes a regular feature, pushing the ideal-wind frequency to 39-43%. The water drops from 21.0C to a cool 18.2C, and precipitation is often at its lowest of the year. That combination means long, clean sessions on the southeast-facing banks, with proper winter groundswell lines doing most of the work.
