Curl Curl seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (May - August)

The wind machine shifts in late autumn, and Curl Curl starts to deliver. Average swell heights hold between 5-6ft (1.6-1.8m) while periods climb to 9.5-9.7s, putting more punch behind each set. The big change is the wind: offshore W, WNW, NW and NNW flow becomes a regular feature, pushing the ideal-wind frequency to 39-43%. The water drops from 21.0C to a cool 18.2C, and precipitation is often at its lowest of the year. That combination means long, clean sessions on the southeast-facing banks, with proper winter groundswell lines doing most of the work.

Fair Surf Season (March - April and September - October)

These shoulder months are transitions between the summer sea breeze regime and winter's westerlies. In March and April, the swell period climbs above 9s and offshore winds become more common, though NE/SE winds still add texture. September and October still have winter swell in the water, but the NE sea breeze starts to reassert itself, making the dawn patrol the best window. Overall, there are plenty of rideable, fun waves, just slightly less consistency and occasional wind slop.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer is the Low Surf Season at Curl Curl, and it has little to do with a lack of waves. The E/ESE/SE/SSE swell window remains active, but periods drop into the 8.3-8.8s range and the prevailing NE/ENE/SSE winds blow across the open southeast-facing beach, creating lumpy, short-period surf. Ideal wind frequencies bottom out at 20-25% and water temperatures rise to 21-23C. It is still possible to find fun banks and clean windows, usually in the early morning before the sea breeze arrives, but surfers chasing consistent quality will look to the autumn.
