Green Island seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (May - August)

The cool season is when Green Island really turns on. As the subtropical ridge shifts north and Tasman Sea lows become more frequent, the average swell ticks up to 1.7-1.8m (5.5-6ft) and the average period climbs into the 9.3-9.5s range. Offshore wind percentages peak between 49 and 53 percent, with W/NW/WNW/NNW flow blowing clean across this southeast-facing beach. S and SSE swells become particularly dominant, making this the most consistent and cleanest stretch of the year.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

The shoulder months are a mixed bag. April and September offer the strongest windows, with ideal winds around 45-50 percent and lingering S/SE swell, while March and October are more hit-or-miss as the wind regime shifts. You can still score excellent waves, but you need to pick your days around Tasman Sea highs and lows.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer brings a consistent 1.6-1.7m (5-5.5ft) of swell, but quality suffers. The NE trade wind regime strengthens, average wave periods fall to 7.9-8.4s, and offshore winds only blow 34-38 percent of the time. A large portion of the energy arrives from E/NE directions instead of the ideal ESE through S window, leaving Green Island lumpy and less organized. Tropical activity can occasionally produce spikey swell, but it is often accompanied by onshore winds and rain, making these months the least reliable for clean sessions.
