Green Island demands a little more from its visitors than most breaks, but those willing to earn their waves will find a payoff that’s hard to match. The trek begins with a long walk and an even longer paddle out to the southwest tip, crossing over the ominous Shark Pit along the way. It’s a commitment, no doubt, but when the right swell lines up, the island delivers. The scenery alone is worth the effort, with sweeping views and rustic cabins perched above the lineup. Just don’t expect solitude—this spot is a summer magnet, and crowds are the norm when conditions align. The wave here is a left-hander, offering long, sectiony rides that peel slowly over an uneven reef bottom. It’s a wave built for intermediate surfers, with forgiving speeds and plenty of room to work on turns. Green Island comes alive on moderate to big swells from the northeast through south, handling surf around three feet with ease. For the best sessions, keep an eye on the wind—northeast breezes are your ticket to clean, rippable faces. Tides? Best Surf Season (May - August)

The cool season is when Green Island really turns on. As the subtropical ridge shifts north and Tasman Sea lows become more frequent, the average swell ticks up to 1.7-1.8m (5.5-6ft) and the average period climbs into the 9.3-9.5s range. Offshore wind percentages peak between 49 and 53 percent, with W/NW/WNW/NNW flow blowing clean across this southeast-facing beach. S and SSE swells become particularly dominant, making this the most consistent and cleanest stretch of the year.
