Merimbula Bar seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (April - August)
Merimbula Bar's most dependable surf window runs from April through August, when the Southern Ocean shifts into full voice. Frontal systems and low-pressure centers rolling across the Tasman Sea pump regular S, SSE and SSW groundswells toward this SSE-facing beach, while the sub-tropical ridge sitting to the north favours more NW/W and NNW offshore winds. Average wave periods climb from 8.1s in summer to a punchier 9.1-9.3s by late autumn and winter, and ideal wind readings jump from the low 20s to 36-44%. This is the season for serious sessions at the Bar.
Fair Surf Season (September - October)
Spring is the shoulder season. The swell motor is still turning over with 43-46% of waves arriving from the S/SE/SSW quarter, and September's 14.9% SSW swell share is one of the year's biggest. However, the trade-off shows up in the wind: ideal offshore percentages drop to 28-33%, and onshore S/SSW breezes become more regular as the subtropics begin to re-establish influence. Expect clean windows between frontal passages rather than days-long consistency.
Low Surf Season (November - March)
From late spring through summer, Merimbula Bar goes into a trickier mode. NE and ENE windswell dominate the wave rose, periods shorten to 8.0-8.8s, and the same synoptic pattern that brings northeast flow also draws afternoon S/SSW seabreezes. Ideal wind drops to 22-27% in mid-summer, and while solid S/SSW groundswell can still sneak through early in March or after Tasman Sea lows, the beach quickly turns drifty and sectiony. The odd cyclone swell or tropical feed can light up the points, but consistency is low.
